Activity Ideas for Kids
Small World Creation Project
Create a mini world / scene using their toys and any objects they find outside or around the house.
(Some examples: mini farm, LEGOland, safari scene, Star Wars, Jurassic park/ dinosaurs, designing a miniature neighbourhood, mystical forest, cars themed scene etc)
Supplies: Toys, recycled materials, outdoor collection of sticks, rocks, leafs, bowls, blocks, cardboard, etc.. You can also use a large tub or just give them designated space for them to set it up,
Setting: This would be a great indoor or outdoor activity!
Age: 6-13 years
( 2-5 year olds would probably enjoy a mini world that was pre-set up for them. The image to the right is a mini world set up in a kindergarten classroom)
Map Creation Activity
Inspire your kids to create a map to a resource of their choice. It could be a pirate's map to find lost gold or a map to their runaway teddy bear!
Get them to set up a particular area in order to design their map. Offer them a variety of craft supplies to design their map! Kids will spend hours doing this and then role playing finding the treasure!
Supplies: paper, cardboard, scissors, markers, crayons and/or pencil crayons. Tea bag and lighter* (*Optional and with close parent supervision only)
Pro Tip: To make the paper look old and worn before the map gets drawn you can use a tea bag to stain the paper to a more golden colour. ( Use a tea bag that has been in hot water and that has cooled of course)
Dab the paper with the tea bag to make it look more rustic and authentic. To make the edges all crispy and uneven you can use a lighter* carefully along the edges of the paper while it is still damp from the tea bag (*Parent or guardian should closely supervise this or fully do this step.) Make sure you let it dry before adding any writing or details.
Setting: Outdoor or indoor activity ( or a combo of both!)
Age: 3-13 years
Everyone loves a good fort! To get kids really inspired, get them to come up with some sort of theme for their fort and if they want they can make a "blueprint" / plan for it.
Supplies: Blankets, sheets, clothing pins, ropes, elastics, branches, sticks, couch cushions, cardboard, twinkle lights or christmas lights etc.. Paper, crayons/markers/ pencil crayons if they want to make a blueprint for it
Setting: Indoor or outdoor
Ages: Appropriate for all ages
This is an extremely simple activity that can branch into a number of different projects if children feel inspired by it.
Get them to think about what they would like to collect (something that can fit into their hand is preferable.) Depending on where you designate your search they could collect rocks, sticks, leafs, a variety of different coloured objects, coins, buttons, recycled caps etc..
Get them to sort/ organize them however they like and display it somewhere. If they are outdoor objects offer to let them wash them ( its fun to see what colours sticks and rocks turn when they are wet. ) This can be an on-going project.
Supplies: Bucket, shovel, tray(s), water and soap
Setting: Can be an indoor activity but most fun when outdoors!
Ages: 2.5-12 years
Inspire the kids to design their own obstacle course!
Supplies: Branches, sticks, bins, ropes, pool noodles, old sheets, outdoor toys, balls, sports equipment, etc...
Again they could design their own map of the obstacle course using a pencil and some paper.
Setting: Outdoors (or could be done indoors if raining)
Ages: 3-13 year olds
Nature Scavenger Hunt & Collage
Hunt for a variety of different nature materials and design them into an art project when you get home!
Supplies: bucket for collection, liquid glue, cardboard or thick construction/ stock paper
Setting: Outdoors & indoors to put together their creation
Ages: 2-13 year olds
